UN’s sustainable development goals

Jakobsens A/S work with UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

Jakobsens A/S wants to do more for people and the nature that surrounds us, and we actively act on UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The Global Compact which was adopted at the 2015 UN Summit aims to combat extreme poverty and hunger, to reduce inequality and to fight climate change as well as to ensure a more sustainable future for everyone on earth.

We are all responsible for the development of our planet and for participating in the change needed to secure the future of our children. That is why Jakobsens A/S is constantly working to optimise our efforts in the following four areas:

1) Environment, climate and ecology, 2) Supplier management, 3) Employees, 4) Social Engagement
We do so to reduce our impact on the globe and adapt our business processes to our surroundings.

Goal #1: End poverty

Jakobsens A/S buys Fairtrade-certified honey and work closely with selected suppliers. In this way, we also support small family-owned apiaries in developing countries.

Goal #3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being

Through sponsorships, Jakobsens A/S supports local and national health promotion initiatives. In addition, we partner with suppliers who support the development of local healthcare systems in their home countries.

Goal #4: Quality education

We employ more apprentices than prescribed by the norms.
Our employees are educated and trained on an ongoing basis, through both internal and external courses.

Goal #6: Clean water and sanitation

We continuously monitor and work to reduce water consumption in our production.

Goal #7: Affordable and clean energy

We buy green energy and have switched to electricity-saving bulbs in both our production premises as well as our administration.

Goal #8: Decent work and economic growth

Jakobsens A/S supports the development of some of the world’s small local communities by purchasing honey from these.

Goal #9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure

We keep our facilities up-to-date so that we do not generate unnecessary pollution and waste.

We are constantly working to optimise our work processes to ensure that we leave as small an impact on the environment as possible.

Goal #10: Reduced inequalities

Through collaboration with suppliers in several developing countries, Jakobsens A/S supports the fight against inequalities in these communities, e.g. between rich and poor and between the genders.

Goal #11: Sustainable cities and communities

Through sponsorships, Jakobsens A/S supports local associations and, thus, well-being in the local area. In addition, we partner with suppliers who support the development of their local communities in their home countries.

Goal #12: Responsible consumption and production

In addition to sending our wastepaper and paper, from both production and administration, for recycling, 100% of the cardboard and paper used by us is FSC-certified.
Furthermore, most of our squeeze bottles for liquid honey are made from recycled plastics.

Goal #15: Life on land

Jakobsens A/S supports the organic mindset by purchasing organic honey, both in Denmark and from our suppliers in the developing countries.

Goal #16: Peace, justice and strong institutions

Jakobsens A/S is a credible company. We place high demands on our suppliers for the same. A requirement of foreign suppliers is that they adhere to our Code of Conduct which is a description of Jakobsens A/S code of ethics. Naturally, Jakobsens A/S neither condones nor accepts any kind of corruption.

Goal #17: Partnerships for the goals

In the fight against honey forgery, Jakobsens A/S has worked closely with the world’s leading laboratories in the field of honey analysis. We make sure to always use the latest and best methods to detect honey forgery.

UN’s Sustainable Development Goalsl

4 chosen areas

Our CSR policy guides our efforts in the four chosen areas and addresses the following:

  • We produce sustainable solutions in plastics and cardboard.
  • Our environmental policy sets targets for reducing the consumption of water, electricity and gas.
  • We work continuously to ensure that an ever greater part of our waste is recycled.
  • All suppliers of raw materials sign our Code of Conduct.
  • We audit all suppliers in Risk countries on social responsibility at least every three years.
  • We have zero tolerance to corruption and honey forgery.
  • We have satisfied and loyal employees with a low level of absence due to sickness.
  • Our employees are continuously trained through internal and external courses.
  • We take responsibility for the future workforce by always employing more apprentices than the target set by the Danish government.

” We respect nature, each other, our product and differences.”

At Jakobsens A/S, we recognise that we are acting in a context and that we have a responsibility to ensure that natural raw materials continue to be available as an important part of our business. In order to be able to continue to do business in this context, it is important that we look after our surroundings and use the fewest possible resources.

Use of resources

Jakobsens A/S works to reduce electricity, water and gas consumption in our production. Therefore, consumption is closely monitored. Investments in reducing consumption have resulted in large reductions in both water, electricity and gas.

We buy green energy and have switched to electricity-saving bulbs in both our production premises as well as our administration.

Jakobsens A/S also tries to reduce the consumption of resources by sending cardboard and paper for recycling. 100 % of the cardboard and paper used by us for packaging is FSC-certified as at 01/08-2019. This certification is a guarantee that animal and plant life is protected and that people who work in the forests are educated and work under proper conditions.

At the end of 2019, Jakobsens A/S also transitioned to using recycled plastics in most of our squeeze bottles. The goal is that, in the course of 2020, the remaining plastic packaging will also transition to recycled plastics.

Ongoing optimizations

As part of our efforts to reduce our resource consumption, Jakobsens A/S has made many major and minor changes in our daily work processes which, in the period 2017 to 2018, have significantly reduced the wastage of raw materials in our production. However, although we have achieved very satisfactory results, we will continue to fight food waste and keep this aspect in mind in our day-to-day operations.

Promoting ecology, sustainability and health

A significant part of Jakobsens’ honey is labelled with the Danish eco-label Ø or the Swedish KRAV-label. This is the guarantee of the consumer that the honey is produced according to state-controlled organic production methods and that the environment, nature and animal welfare have been taken into account in the production.

Jakobsens’ Fairtrade-certified products are part of an international labelling scheme that works to give farmers and workers in some of the world’s poorest countries a fairer income and better working conditions. At the same time, consideration is shown to the environment in the production.

”We are committed – We stand together and are proud of what we believe in”

Jakobsens A/S employs 34 people. It is crucial that everyone thrives and has the necessary skills to create the quality product for which Jakobsens A/S is known.

Good working environment

At Jakobsens A/S we are proud of our employees. It is our vision to be the best in class in employee satisfaction, because we believe that satisfied and committed employees make a difference. Therefore, in 2017, a survey of employee satisfaction and well-being was conducted. This showed that the overall level of satisfaction of all employees was above average. In addition, the survey showed that our employees were loyal and responsible which adds value to Jakobsens A/S on a daily basis.

In 2019, we chose to repeat the survey and 76 percent of employees responded within the categories “very satisfied” or “satisfied”, indicating that the level of satisfaction has developed in a positive direction while being generally high. In addition, employees responded that there is no bullying in the workplace and that they are loyal to Jakobsens A/S and satisfied with their job.

When the survey is repeated in 2020, our goal is to maintain the high level of employee satisfaction. We will therefore actively and in collaboration with our employees work to achieve our goals and create an even better working environment.

At Jakobsens A/S, we put sustainable employee management at the forefront the consequence of which is a constant focus not only on the physical but also the mental work environment. Our managers and middle managers are trained to care for the human resource that our employees are. This is done by constantly preventing the imbalances that may occur in the mental work environment. This may be during periods of increased workload or individual personal challenges.

Quality training, decent jobs and economic growth

Surveys conducted in 2018 show that every tenth company loses orders due to a shortage of skilled labour. A large part of the explanation is that, in Denmark, we do not educate enough skilled workers in the industry. At Jakobsens A/S, we take our responsibility seriously and have therefore aimed to always employ at least two apprentices although the set norm is less than one. Apprenticeships may be in production or quality and administration, depending on our needs.

In a specialised industry such as the honey industry, it is important to pass on the expert knowledge that has been built up over the years. Therefore, employees are regularly and continuously educated and trained within their areas of work and in the various production processes.

”We are credible – We take action”

Jakobsens A/S is a credible company and we can vouch for our products. In order to ensure the best possible products, a close cooperation with credible suppliers is essential.

Code of Conduct

In addition to buying honey locally, Jakobsens A/S imports honey from all over the world. In the summer of 2017, we implemented our first official Code of Conduct which is based on the UN Global Compact. This Code of Conduct describes the minimum ethical requirements for how Jakobsens A/S wishes to conduct business. We see it as our duty to influence our suppliers to also comply with these standards. In 2018, we achieved that all our existing suppliers of raw material adopted and signed our code of ethics, contained in our Code of Conduct. In future, all new suppliers will also be required to adopt Jakobsens A/S’ requirements for ethically correct business conduct.

Fighting corruption and forgery

The most significant threats to the honey industry are corruption and honey forgery, which Jakobsens A/S experiences to a great extent. We have a zero tolerance policy towards this and we expect our suppliers to also comply with this policy. This is illustrated both in our daily collaboration with our suppliers and by our numerous supplier visits. In addition, our suppliers undertake to work within the code of ethics formulated in our Code of Conduct.

Jakobsens A/S works closely with the world’s leading laboratories in Germany, where the raw honey is thoroughly analysed before being tapped in Denmark. Through our comprehensive analysis plan, Jakobsens A/S ensures that the honey is always analysed using the latest and best methods. This is done to ensure consumers a clean and safe product every time.

”We create value – When we do something, we do it to make it better than it was”

Supporting local, health-promoting and business-related initiatives and thereby creating value for customers, manufacturers and the local community is important to Jakobsens A/S.

Life on land

In 2020, Jakobsens A/S will begin work on converting an earlier piece of farmland into a natural bee and insect-friendly area. We do this because we want to help along the biodiversity and help make room for animals and insects, by creating a place where natural processes are allowed to take place.

Sustainable cities and local communities

Jakobsens A/S also wants to support the local and national business community through e.g. collaboration with the Business Council – Herning & Ikast-Brande and the general employers’ association, Confederation of Danish Industry.

Locally, Jakobsen A/S has collaborated with a Danish beekeeper to make it possible to launch an unheated, organic Danish honey in selected retail stores in the fall of 2019.

Responsible consumption and production

It is not merely in Denmark that Jakobsens A/S wishes to support the beekeepers. In 2017, Jakobsens A/S entered into a collaboration with a Danish honey producer in Nicaragua. This has a great focus on people, the environment and the development of the local community. In addition, beekeepers from all over Central America are trained to ensure continued development and production.

In addition, through the acquisition of Fairtrade-certified honey, Jakobsens A/S support beekeepers in third-world countries. Fairtrade ensures that workers receive a fair wage and better working conditions. The Fairtrade-certified honey producers undergo regular third-party controls, both notified and unannounced, to ensure that they comply with the established rules and standards.

Health and well-being

Through sponsorships, Jakobsens A/S supports e.g. the local handball club, Herning-Ikast Handball, the annual relay Stafet for Livet, and Team Rynkeby’s journey to Paris. In January 2018, Jakobsens collaborated with REMA 1000 Denmark and focused on brain injury, Alzheimer’s and sclerosis through the campaign to support a sweet cause, Støt en sød sag. Here, customers could design their own honey and the winner, Forget Not Honey, could subsequently be purchased in REMA 1000. With each bottle sold, Jakobsens and REMA 1000 supported the Alzheimer’s Association with DKK 2.

In 2019, Jakobsens and REMA 1000 worked together to increase the quality of life for children with respiratory disease and their families. The foundation, Børnelungefonden, received DKK 2 per sold cup of Everyday Honey.

an optimal production

Minimal waste

At Jakobsens A/S, we focus on minimising food waste. We have therefore also developed and implemented machines that ensure minimal waste.

This has resulted in a 22% reduction over the past three years and we are still working to optimise the process so that we can continue to improve.

When nature cooperates

When apiculture bears fruit

Honey from Danish orchards is fruitful in several ways. Bees make honey, but they also play a vital role when pollinating fruit trees.

Honey bees are indispensable in orchards. A plant must be pollinated, in order to seed, meaning that flower dust (pollen) from a male flower must be passed on to a female flower of another plant. Since flowers are not able to move, they need help for the pollination. And that’s where bees can help.

In order to achieve good fructification, all fruit trees basically require pollination and the honey bees can for instance do this when humming from one flower to the next.

Danish honey bees contribute with high pollination in Danish orchards, making us able to harvest more fruit and high-quality honey at the same time. And the result is this idyllic summer honey, collected in Danish orchards.
